Winning Bid USD $23,000
Auction Ended Thursday, January 12 at 8:29pm 2017
This 1978 Lotus Esprit Series I has been in the seller’s family for 25 years and was purchased in the early 1990s after being damaged by a fire on the rear passenger-side. The car was then repaired and upgraded by the seller’s father with fiberglass European bumpers, front spoiler extensions, and rear hatch louvers. Additionally, the seller’s father completed a full rebuild of the 2.0 liter naturally-aspirated inline-four around 15 years ago including a swap to dual Dellorto carburetors. Four years ago, the car developed a mechanical issue with the engine struggling to achieve power at temperature. It has mostly sat since and is now offered as a running project with a spreadsheet covering parts purchases during the repair, a factory workshop manual, and a clean Washington state title.
Being a Series I car, this Esprit features the mostly uncluttered wedge design penned by Giorgetto Giugiaro. The body was completely repaired in the early 1990s after a fire damaged the majority of the rear passenger-side of the vehicle while it was with the prior owner. Slim fiberglass European bumpers, front spoiler extensions, and rear hatch louvers were added by the seller’s father to give the car an updated, more-aggressive look.
In these photos, the body panels all look to be straight and free of major flaws, while the 20-year-old repaint looks to be in driver-level condition with some fiberglass settling in the finish noted by the seller and detailed in photos. The seller lists major exterior flaws consisting of a small crack in the passenger-side mirror, some rock chips in the nose and hood, and scratches in the rear windshield which are covered by the added louvres. Many of these flaws are further detailed in the photo gallery below.
A walk-around video with this Esprit running is shown above, giving interested parties a good idea of the overall cosmetic condition. The car has been a frequent participant in Seattle’s All British Field Meet car show and has won 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place multiple times according to the seller.
14″ Wolfrace alloy wheels with factory Series I center caps look to be in good condition. They are wrapped in older BFGoodrich Radial T/As with decent tread remaining, though the seller states they may need replacement due to age.
Inside, the seats, door panels, and top of the instrument binnacle were reupholstered during the repair while the dashboard and carpeting are original according to the current owner. The 23,531 miles displayed on the odometer are close to accurate according to the seller, though the speedometer stopped working a few years ago. The car has been driven an estimated 100 miles since, but true mileage is unknown.
The lighting rocker switch is reported to need some fidgeting to get the running lights to work. The air conditioning system was not re-installed during the repair process, but all related parts are reportedly included with the sale.
The seller’s father has been an active member of the local Evergreen Lotus Car Club and a collector of other Lotus cars for many years. Around 15 years ago, he completed a full rebuild of the 2.0 liter naturally-aspirated twin cam inline-four including a swap to the dual Dellorto carburetors displayed in these photos. All parts and costs related to the rebuild are detailed on a spreadsheet that can be provided to the next owner. The surrounding engine bay carpeting and cover shown in the photo gallery were recovered during the restoration.
Around four years ago, the engine developed an issue where it will reportedly start and run for hours, but once it is warmed up and at-speed, it struggles to achieve power and the revs drop. The seller has attempted to resolve the issue by pulling out and cleaning the carburetors, draining the gas tank and putting in new fuel, and replacing the in-line fuel filter. He has not tried to install new spark plugs, plug wires, or a fresh distributor and suggests that would be a good starting point for the next owner.
Included documentation consists of an extensive spreadsheet covering parts purchases during the repair in the early 1990s in addition to a factory workshop manual and miscellaneous papers as shown above. The spreadsheet is further detailed in the photo gallery below.

Location: Calgary, Alberta Canada, Imported from Las Vegas in 2006 Sold for $9,450
https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1978-lotus-esprit-4/
Winning Bid USD $9,450
Auction Ended Tuesday, May 23 at 9:13pm 2017
This 1978 Lotus Esprit is a Series I project that was imported from Las Vegas to Calgary, Alberta in May 2006 and has been owned for four years by the seller. Powered by a 2.0L twin-cam four paired with a 5-speed manual transaxle, the car runs and drives but has reportedly seen little use during its stay in Canada. Some sorting is advisable before it spends more regular time on the road. A stock exterior appearance is retained, though interior and fueling modifications are detailed below. A new clutch was installed in 2016, and the sale includes removed and spare parts, shop manuals and Canadian registration.
The wedge-shaped Series I body featured uncluttered Giugiaro lines, and this example described as straight and free of evident accident damage. Black paint is said to be original with exception of the inner door rails and air dam, and the seller notes a variety of scratches and chips as well as missing paint on both A-pillars. Occasional fiberglass cracking is visible in photos, and a window sill shows bubbling under the finish.
Staggered-width polished 14″ Wolfrace wheels wear mixed rubber, with rear tires from 2015 and older fronts in need of replacement according to the seller. Center caps and new emblems are included but not installed, and no spare wheel is present. Significant cracking is detailed on both US-market bumpers.
Black leather Recaro sport seats have replaced the stock single-piece buckets, and most other interior coverings have been reupholstered in matching leather. Doors and sail panels have been modified for aftermarket speakers, though no stereo is currently installed. A small aftermarket race wheel has replaced the original.
The AutoMeter tach and GPS-based speedo seen here were reportedly installed in order to obtain Canadian registration and both are currently working. Stock green-faced Veglia gauges are also included, though the speedometer cable is damaged and the factory tach is also nonfunctional. The removed factory odometer shows just under 43k miles. Original light switches have been replaced with toggles mounted where a stereo would normally reside, while heating and ventilation controls have been disconnected.
Power is from a 2.0-liter, naturally-aspirated twin-cam four which originally made 140 horsepower in US trim and is paired with a 5-speed manual transaxle. A service in 2016 included a clutch replacement and rebuild of the dual Dellorto sidedraft carburetors. A three-gallon fuel cell has replaced the original dual tanks, which are included but whose internals are corroded according to the seller.
Factory-style carpeted liners are retained in the engine bay. Though said to run well, the car has been driven only a handful of miles by the seller, who recommends replacement of the front shocks and tires as well as an alignment before any significant driving is attempted.
The sale includes a variety of removed and extra trim parts as well as a shop manual, carburetor handbook, and period parts list. All Canadian records are included, but none are available from prior US ownership.

USD $20,250 (Reserve Not Met) Auction Ended Tuesday, May 4 at 9:25pm
This 1978 Lotus Esprit S1 is finished in red over tan leather and has been fitted with a Turbo-look body kit consisting of a lower front spoiler, sculpted lower cladding, color-keyed bumpers, and revised rear bodywork. Power is from a 1,907cc inline-four paired with a five-speed manual transaxle, and additional equipment includes air conditioning, power windows, engine cover louvers, and basketweave wheels. The car was acquired by the selling dealer in October 2020 and is offered in Canada with Ontario registration.
The fiberglass body is finished in red, and has been modified with Turbo-style bodywork including a lower front spoiler, ducted rocker moldings, color-keyed front and rear bumper covers, and revised rear end styling with a lip spoiler, engine cover louvers, and later-model Rover SD1 tail lights. Retractable headlamps are shown raised and lowered in gallery photographs below, and US-spec side markers are mounted at the front and rear corners.
Two-piece 15″ wheels wear gold basketweave faces, Lotus center caps, and Michelin Pilot tires. The Esprit featured four-wheel disc brakes, with the rears mounted inboard, as well as independent suspension at all four corners.
Tan leather upholstery covers bucket seats with fixed backrests, while the dash and carpets are trimmed in black. Amenities include air conditioning and power windows as well as an Alpine stereo with aftermarket speakers.
A Moto-Lita steering wheel sits head of a pod containing switchgear in addition to green Veglia gauges including a tachometer, a 260-km/h speedometer, and a five-digit odometer showing 46k kilometers (~29k miles).
The 1,907cc inline-four is mounted longitudinally behind the driver’s compartment and features dual overhead camshafts actuating four valves per cylinder. Induction is via dual twin-choke Dell’Orto DHLA carburetors. A Citroën-sourced five-speed manual transaxle transmits power to the rear wheels.
