This 1977 Lotus Esprit is a Series 1 example that was purchased by the seller around one year ago from Barry Spencer of Spencer’s Motors in Rohnert Park, California. At the time, the car was mid-way through a refurbishment, and the seller elected to have Barry complete the project before taking delivery. Work included new suspension components, a few mechanical updates, and a redone interior by Tom’s in Modesto, California. $36k in records including the purchase of the car will accompany the sale. Power comes from a factory Type 907 1973cc inline-four paired to a correct 5-speed manual transaxle. This Lotus is now being offered with restoration-related documentation and a clean California title.
The seller states that a professional repaint was completed in the past to a good standard. This Esprit is equipped with correct polished 14″ alloy wheels wearing Hankook Optimo tires at each corner. Additional exterior photos can be viewed in the gallery below.
As part of the 2016-2017 work, Tom’s in Modesto, California refreshed the interior with new tan leather upholstery and carpeting.
The cabin presents well in these photos, and the seller claims that all features are in working order. The factory instrument panel is functional, and the odometer currently displays 23,452 miles.
To the seller’s knowledge, the Type 907 1973cc inline-four and 5-speed manual transaxle have been maintained in mostly stock specifications. K&N air filter elements have been fitted to the dual carburetor setup, while an oil cooler, upgraded radiator, and non-original cooling fans were added during the refurbishment. This Esprit passed a California emissions test in June 2017 and was serviced in July 2017. A new rear main seal was installed just prior to this auction.
The suspension was completely redone by Spencer’s Motors according to the seller, and additional detailed images of the undercarriage are displayed in the photo gallery below. There is currently a small lien on the car, which the seller will need to pay off before the title can be transferred from his bank to the new owner.
