Notes:
The car had been originally supplied to Charles Follet in Mayfair, self registered and was therefore most likely a demo. It was nice to see that the car still wore the original "Follet" plates front and back. The car ended up at a used car specialist in Northants, and in October 1979 was registered to it's second owner. I still have the invoice for this which shows the car was sold for £8500. The second owner kept the car until October 2005, but there is a huge file of invoices showing that the car was rebuilt between 1987 and 1989.
The whole exterior was repainted in the original Lagoon Blue, in addition all matt black door trims, all chrome trims and join rubbers were replaced. The wheels were refurbished and fitted with Eagles at each corner. Mechanically, the car was then rebuilt, with new cooling system, new wheel bearings, bushes, dampers, steering rack, exhaust, carbs rebuilt.
The only thing that was left untouched was the interior. The pictures may well show the non - original wheel - which I have and will change. The interior is stripped at the mo, and all the sections finished in original beige mole velour are being replaced by magnoila factory pattern / stitched leather - which just made it as as option on very late S1's. The original Brown Marcasite trim has faded, but is all intact - this I shall re - dye by hand and in situ, before refitting the interior. The exterior is so good that I think that it's worth completing this, but I have spoken to trimmer and we have decided that it must be as it would have been as if it had have been done at Hethel.
Being a late S1 there are subtle differences to my early S1 - the headlamps are twin motors, battery has been moved to the back.
Strangely, the project stopped in 1989 and the car was mothballed until 2005, when it was sold to it's third owner through the local paper! He had the car for two months before I then bought it.
he car has covered 42,000 miles and drives as tightly as a much younger car, thanks to all the work done in the past. Thing I love about it is that every fitting / every fixture looks new. Looking underneath the car, all the nuts and bolts are like new. Plus I love the colour combination.

Update 08/04/2021 For sale on ebay £45,000 (Now White)
For Sale on Ebay 18-09-12
With reluctance I'm selling my Esprit S1, I have owned this car for 14 years. I no longer have a garage to store the car, and a family so the time has come.
There are not many S1's in the Uk, so this really is a unique chance to purchase an iconic piece of British sportscar history.
I have a massive file of invoices and service work, history and photos of the car from previous owners.
The car came to me with 32k miles, and I car has only undertaken 68k from new, not bad for a 34 year old car.
The Lotus is in full working order, with good body and interior order, currently SORN.
It would provide a really nice every day classic as is, or the perfect car for a nut and bolt top draw body and mechanical restoration, as it is all working, present and correct.
In my ownership the engine and exhaust sytem have been rebuilt £3k.
The Dellorto carburrettors were rebuilt in May 2012 £400, with some special "flame stopper" filters fitted.
I have just spent £1300 August 2012 on tidying the car up, the carbs were added and tuned, the body tidied, and mechanically looked over.
A new MOT in August 2012.
The engine runs sweetly, and all electrics are working, even the headlamps.
The interior is the original green dash, and steering wheel, and black vinyl dash. The seats are the original black velour, although I decided to have the outers professionaly retrimmed in black leather. This interior looks really good, and wouldn't need any work if it were to undergo a comprehensive restoration.
The car has two brand new tyres to the rear, with barely 100 miles undertaken.
Fortunately the body had been off the vehicle about 20 years ago, I have photo's of this from a previous owner, and was painted and rust inhibited, this has stood the car in good stead, and its chassis is in really good condition. The car has never been bumped, and the body, although showing the normal paint stress marks, is the same paint it left the factory in. The car has just undergone some touch up work on all of the matt black areas, under the bonnet, window frames etc to smarten the car up for this sale.
I have constantly been tempted to respray the car white, but never really got round to it, knowing how good the body is as is, it's that fine line between a original well looked after classic car with patina, or that of a shiny utopian £3k restoration respray. Similar restored S1's are changing hands for up to £30k, and with the new Esprit costing £100k next year, you'll be owning a real appreciating assett, everyone loves the James Bond S1 Esprit, hence why you are reading this.
The car has it's original speedline alloys, as it was a later car, likewise its S2 spoiler was added a long time ago, I do have an original rare S1 spoiler to go with the car, so if you did intend to respray and fully restore, you have it.
Modifications to the car, all previous to my purchase, include a rather useful, oil and temperature gauge in the floor cill (always good in a fibreglass car), and a custom stainless exhaust system, this could easily be removed if not to your liking, but makes a rather tame sports car sound, well, like a sports car should.
It is believed the car was a mule car was a Lotus factorybetween the S1 and S2 models, hence the mods.
The rear engine bay side and rear shelves do need to be rebuilt, its just plywood and car carpet, but could be rebuilt to suit, and would be inexpensive.
I can forward detailed photo's, and if you have any further enquiries please e-mail me at justin@beor.co.uk
