1978 Lotus Esprit 1978 LOTUS ESPRIT S1. MATCHING NUMBERS ENGINE.
Offered for sale, from KURT TANNER MOTORCARS, is this fairly nice and original Lotus Esprit. This car was recently purchased by us from a dealer in Sacramento, CA who bought the car originally from it's long term California owner. The car still retains it's original blue/yellow license plates and shows that it's been off the road in storage for the last 27 years, since 1992!
The body on this car looks very decent overall, with nice fitting panels, and no signs of accident damage anywhere. Paintwork appears to be older to the car and in very average condition, and looks to have been repainted only once. The car's original fiberglass body has acquired about 2-4 chips that could be professionally repaired for a good result. Overall, there is some typical light spidering in various places in the gelcoat, which can be attended to during it's next repaint. The front and rear bumper on the car could use replacement, as they are the original and have suffered in the California sunshine. The car still retains its 5 original, desirable Wolfrace alloy wheels.
The interior looks to have been re-trimmed in the past trying to keep the car's original pattern. It's currently livable and usable as is, but could use some tightening in a few areas. All of the window glass is it's original Triplex brand in generally very good condition, with a replaced "Safevue" windshield at some point. The car is missing some of it's rear window glass trim.
Mechanically, the engine is exceptionally clean and runs fantastic, with no leaks. The car's mileage seems believable. It starts nicely on the key with a battery and fuel gravity fed into the carbs. Oil pressure is excellent. There's zero exhaust smoke. The quattro valve cylinder head sounds nice with healthy clearances. It revs well and would only require a simple service/tune-up. The braking system and clutch hydraulics need a major servicing to make it roadworthy, as it's been I storage all of this time. The engine cover and partial air cleaner is missing, but can be sourced.
The car's underside looks quite tidy and clean.The chassis is in excellent condition and very solid, with no signs of rust or accident damage, being a California car. Also included is the original jack and handle in its factory bag.
Overall, this exciting, low mileage, desirable Lotus Esprit S1 Coupe in great colors, is a rare offering with only 718 examples produced worldwide from 1976 to 1978. It can be mechanically serviced and improved to be driven/enjoyed very soon in it's current condition, and later cosmetically restored. These early Lotuses are becoming more desirable as of late as collectors are realizing their scarcity, and this low mileage, California car presented for sale here is a wise investment going forward.

Hi Steven
505H Has been restored and removed the sunroof, marker lights and changed the rear.
I do this work and did the same with 182H, I take it even further and replace the dash so the cars are just LHD domestic spec.
I did JPS 008 as well the same way.
It’s a lot of fibreglass work but worth the effort.

Original owner uncertain. Owned by John Baldwin in Louisiana Purchased by Dr. Bruce Anthony Baxter of Akron, Ohio Then Tony Krncevic in Cleveland, Ohio Then Rick Ulmer in Cleveland, Ohio Then back to Tony Krncevic now living in Toledo, Ohio Then (and currently) Mike Halker in Toledo, Ohio Rare factory leather interior. Front air dam and radiator were converted to S2 style -- very high quality conversion. Genuine low mile car -- the body and engine feel and sound tight like new, however the car sat outside prior to John Baldwin's ownership, and the top half and interior became weathered. Mike Halker has performed a sympathetic restoration, involving a retrim of the interior saving the original carpet and much of the original seather, and replacing all of the marcasite. Top half of the car has been repainted, however bottom half has been left original as the paint shows excellent, and having almost no stone chips behind the wheels as a testament to its very low miles. Sympathetic restoration and mechanical refresh should be completed by spring/summer 2018. Cheers, Tony K.
