12-03-12 - For Sale on Ebay (Eugene Oregon USA)

We have available a 1977 Lotus Esprit Series I. This Lotus model is the marque’s first true entry in the exotic car arena. The suspension was a major advance and in Lotus tradition provided incredible roadholding while retaining a supple and balanced ride. The 907 series engine was also a major engineering feat. This is one of the first production belt-driven twin cams with four valves per cylinder and a lower main bearing web that made the all alloy engine strong and reliable. Lotus advanced fiberglass body quality and construction techniques with this model by forming an upper and lower half, then joining them at the beltline. The wedge shape is classic 70's and yet very pleasing to the eye.

We obtained this car from the estate of a long-term owner where it had been garaged. It has had approximately 400 miles since and a lot of attention has been paid to making the car reliable. This Lotus is a US delivered car but when the engine was rebuilt it was upgraded to the rare and better performing dual Delorto sidedraft carbs of the European specification cars. This car has just undergone a full major service including all new water hoses, water pump, radiator and cooling fans. While doing the belt service we also fitted vernier cam gears to allow fine adjustment of the cams for best engine performance. The Wolfrace wheels were re-polished and a brand new set of proper size BF Goodrich tires were fitted. All electrical was sorted, repaired, and all the gauges and switches on the car work. The interior received a new set of professionally installed carpets and the seats are in nice condition. The body is in very good condition, the paint is nice and all glass is all good. The chassis is in excellent shape and shows no signs of accident damage, and has had no rust ever. This car starts, runs and drives very nicely. The clutch engages smoothly and the gearbox shifts easily with no weak syncros, and the brakes stop true. The only real cosmetic issues are minor trim parts that is common to Lotus build and cracks in the lightweight bumpers the prior owner fitted. New fiberglass ones are available, but the vendor makes them to order and could not deliver a set in time for us.

Description for Lotus Esprit 1977

Finished in Arctic White just like the James Bon car driven by Roger Moore in "The spy who loved me". It has a Brown/Tan interior and runs well. It has nice original racing wheels and the tires are in good shape too. It has prefabricated bumpers with a “Wet Nellie” vanity plate on it and an antique tag so you never have to go through emissions again! I have a lotus certificate of provenance from Andy Graham, company archivist. I have checked the engine number out and it matches.

“The Esprit was launched in October 1975 at the Paris Motor Show and entered production in June 1976, replacing the Europa in the Lotus model lineup. These first cars became known as “Series 1? (or S1) Esprits. The wedge-shaped fiberglass body was mounted on a steel backbone chassis. Power was from the 1,973 cc (120.4 cu in) Lotus 907 4-cylinder engine that produced 160 bhp (119 kW; 162 PS) in European trim and 140 bhp (104 kW; 142 PS) in US/Federal trim. The engine was mounted longitudinally behind the passengers and drove the rear wheels through a Citroën C35 5-speed manual transaxle also used in the SM and Maserati Merak. Rear brakes were mounted inboard, following contemporary racing practice. The Series 1 embodied Lotus’ performance through light weight mantra, weighing less than 1,000 kg (2,205 lb).Front suspension was by upper A-arms and lower lateral links triangulated by the anti-roll bar. Rear suspension was by tapering box-section trailing arms and lower lateral links. The half-shafts had no provision for plunge and handled some of the lateral forces. There were coil-over shock absorbers and disc brakes at all four corners. Steering was by an unassisted rack and pinion.

The S1 Esprit was distinguished from later Esprits by its shovel-style front air dam, Fiat X1/9-sourced taillights, absence of body-side ducting, and Wolfrace alloy wheels. Inside the car, the S1 Esprit had a one-piece instrument cluster with green-faced Veglia gauges.”

I have had a couple of questions about a louver, it does come off, it takes two screws to remove it and then you just pop it out.
The road feel is phenomenal and in Colin Chapman fashion its light nimble chassis and body don't require a huge engine to be able to propel it to sporting speeds and it handles like its on rails. Truly Thrilling, it is one of the finest examples in the wild extent.

1977 Lotus Esprit S1.

Car has been in storage for the better part of the past 4 years. Structurally sound. Body has some cosmetic issues (bubbles, scratches), but no major issues. Tires have less than 100 miles on them. Interior in good condition. Now for the story:

I bought the Lotus about 5 years ago on eBay. When it arrived, ran well but had some electrical issues (horn, turn signals, brake lights). Also discovered no motor for headlights. I live in a VERY rural part of Southeastern NC and knew little to nothing about how to work on Lotuses (1st mistake). Took the Lotus to a local automotive electric shop (2nd mistake) where they said they could repair it. Stayed there for almost 1 year with numerous attempts (or so they claimed) to repair electrical system, but car was no better than when I first took it there. They also could not repair the headlights. (Guess I should have known to bring the car home when THEY asked me to find parts for it). At that time the car ran and handled fine. No problems with starting, shifting, overheating, steering, etc. Because of no brake lights and no inspection, I only drove it once in a great while on the roads near my home. Otherwise, I kept it stored. I already spent $14,000 for the car and did not have more money to put in it at that time. The closest mechanics I found who work on Lotus Esprits were over 100 miles away.

Last year, my teenage son decided to take the Lotus out for a spin (without my knowledge, of course). While he was driving, the car ran out of gas (I drained the fuel system) about a mile from our home. His friend "helped" him get back home by pushing the car with his truck while my son steered (I guess putting gas in it cost too much). This left a superficial mark across the back bumper. I put gas in it later that month. The car would start if I sprayed starter in the carbs but would not keep running. I guess a problem with the fuel delivery (fuel pump, filter, line, etc). I have vacillated between spending the money to transport the Lotus and have any and all repairs done or selling it. My daughter needs a car, so I decided to sell the Lotus.

Here are the issues as I know:
-Starts but does not run.
-Electrical system needs repair.
-Headlight motor system needs repair.
-Cosmetic issues.

There ARE some positive issues:
-Car has no structural issues that I am aware.
-Interior and Exterior in very good condition overall.
-Tires with 98-99% tread left.
-New steering wheel and shifter.
-Custom floor mats.
-No fluid leaks.
-Shop manuals included.
-Last but not least, this car is definitely a head turner and was a blast to drive!

If you have wanted an exotic sports car, but did not want to spend a ton of money or invest a lot of time and energy restoring one from the ground up, this may be the car for you. I have noted all of the issues that I am aware of and offer no guarantees. I am selling the car as is with no refunds or returns. I am listing the Lotus at a price that takes into consideration the new owner will need to spend money to make repairs. The buyer will need to make arrangements for the Lotus to be picked up and shipped. Please note the Lotus has a VERY low ground clearance, so the buyer will need transport with a rollback. Thanks for looking and e-mail me with any questions or if you would like more photos.
On Jul-30-11 at 12:22:01 PDT, seller added the following information:
Addendum: It has been pointed out that the Lotus does not resemble the 1977 S1, but rather a 1985-1987 S3. The person who sold it to me stated there had been modifications to the body. Looking at other 1977 Lotus S1s, I agree the car does not resemble them. I am not an expert on Lotuses, but the title and label on the inside of the driver's side door list the date as "1977", and the VIN numbers on the title and under the windshield match so I listed it as such. As I have shown the maximum of 24 photos and have received bids on the car, eBay states I cannot list anymore photos. I shall be glad to send photos of the title, VIN plate on the front windshield, the plate on the driver's side door, and the plate under the hood if you send me your email. I have disclosed every issue that I am aware and welcome any and all questions.
