  Notes:
Found the car in Geneva. Previous owner used it to race. Has been poorly maintained and heavily modified. It has a new non original interior made of gray leather with yellow stitching. I'm restoring it to factory specs. Original frame in good condition. Original body in average original condition, some little damages and paint mistakes. Engine and all underside mechanics are being rebuilt. Next year I will restore the body and then probably redo the interior.

21-09-2021 Update - Sold for £58,830 by Classic Car Auctions, The reg changed form CYD 349A back to original.

My New Esprit (Officially the first BLACK UK car) I sold it for £9,000 (2019) to a chap in Bradford of which he has sold it in the same condition for £15,000 (well done) -

here was his discription - This advert is for a series 1 Lotus Esprit restoration project and yes it is the same model of car that James Bond had and before you ask, no it doesn't go underwater, well not more than once anyway. This is the cheapest S1 Esprit for sale in the UK.

This car was in somebody's front garden and I bought it earlier this year with the intention of restoring it but due to lack of storage space I am reluctantly going to have to pass it on. Series 1 cars are extremely difficult to find and there are probably only around 50 of them currently on the road in the UK. If you don't have the money to buy a fully restored car and you have some skill this could be a way to get into Lotus ownership at a fraction of the cost. This particular car was built in February of 1977 and left the factory as a black gel coat (i.e. colour in the mould) car - it was in fact the very first RHD black car and possibly the only one that was ever gel coat as the later ones were all painted. As you can see it was repainted yellow at some point in its life but the V5 still has it listed as black and it's been off the road since around 1990, hence the low mileage of 27,000. Somebody has stuck 2.2 stickers on it but this car is not an S2.2. I managed to get its original registration number back from DVLA as somebody had put a 1963 plate on it and the V5 is in my name with this registration mark. Due to its age it is MOT and tax free but as you can see it will require a full restoration and is not for the faint-hearted! It is HPI clear and I also have the heritage certificate from Lotus.

I have spent a lot of time and money finding most of the impossible to find bits for this car including: original steering wheel, crash pad and boss, jack, handle, wheel brace and toolkit (there is 1 spanner missing at present). The driver's side door glass was smashed but I have a set of tinted glass to replace all the glass in both doors, which will be included in the sale. The original glass was all clear but is no longer available. The two rear quarter lights, although not shown in the photos, are both there and are tinted.

The original engine is all there and is matching numbers although it's in bits. The head has a good set of valves and springs and doesn't look as though it's ever been skimmed. It has a pair of yellow dot camshafts which were what it left the factory with and the cam carriers look good. The liners for the block (it's a wet linered engine) all look usable as do the pistons but it will need a new set of shells and piston rings. The crank is a good 2.0L crank which I believe has never been ground, however it's not a cross drilled crank which this car would have originally had. The supplied crank can be cross drilled for a couple of hundred pounds. The clutch, pressure plate and flywheel are all supplied and the gearbox is still in the car, although you will need a clutch slave cylinder. Most of the pipe work is there but a couple of the smaller pipes are missing although these can be bought. The chassis has surface rust but I think it will clean up pretty well but until the body is removed it's difficult to tell exactly.

A pair of the correct Dellorto carburettors (DHLA45E) are there as well as the mounting plates and trumpets. The air box will need a couple of minor repairs but both halves are there and the correct inlet manifold is also with the car (painted a nice shade of red!).

There is a full interior supplied with nothing missing but it will all need recovering. Out of the factory it was a brown marcasite interior with contrasting mushroom colour (it's too late to have had the tartan interior) and I have all the material to replicate this, which again will be supplied. The ashtrays for this car were in the sills and not in the centre console. The gearknob is there as are the sunvisors and the interior light and seatbelt surrounds. The seats are correct for a series 1 car and aren't from a later car. It has the green Veglia instruments but the facia panels are missing but can be bought from SJ Sportscars. The binnacle itself is there as well as the heater pipework. The heater itself is still in the car along with the headlamp lift motor and mechanism plus the brake and clutch master cylinders.

The radiator is there as well as the radiator tray and front/rear valance. It does have an after market sunroof which I would personally get rid of. The rear brakes are both complete and with the car as these alone can fetch £1,000 for the pair!! The oil cooler is all supplied and things like the distributor, alternator and starter motor are also there.

The wheels are the correct Wolfrace wheels and the spare is also supplied. The original bonnet has had a pair of air scoops fitted (which is a bit odd as the engine's in the back!) but it also comes with another bonnet which hasn't been modified. The bumpers are both there although the front bumber has a couple of areas that need repairing. There is a complete exhaust which could well be the original and the manifold doesn't look as though it's cracked at all which they are prone to.

Obviously it will need to be trailered away and no,I won't accept a cheque from Nigeria. The car is located in Bedford and will not be released until paid for in full with cleared funds.

If the new owner could keep me updated I would really appreciate it. Bibster@lotusproject.co.uk
